Neusiedler See – Fertő tó – A data platform for optical and bathymetry survey for reed classification
and sediment transport modelling
Lake Neusiedl/Fertő, a cross-border steppes lake in Austria and Hungary, faces several common territorial challenges related to reed population and sediments transport. Furthermore, the low water level affected by a decrease of precipitation, an increased pollution load in catchment areas, changeing water quality and an aging of the reed belt show that further developments are necessary to preserve Lake Neusiedl/Fertő as an environmental habitat. Addressing these the challenges the Fertö strategy study (2014) commissioned by AT-HU Water Commission points out the importance of monitoring the lateral reed growth and the structure of the reed population, Development of numerical models of wind, water depth and wave related sediment transport and the ongoing adaptation of transboundary coordination of water management. Also, the AT-HU water commission agreed to launch a project on reed management and joint management of morphological issues at Lake Neusiedl/Fertő, which follows on from the developments of the GeNeSee and Reben preliminary projects.
Addressing these issues, the project NeuBase aims the development of an integrated data platform for optical and bathymetry surveys, supporting reed classification and sediment transport modelling.
