A téma rövid leírása, a kidolgozandó feladat részletezése:
A GRACE műholdpár 2002-es felbocsátása elsőként valósította meg az ún. Satellite-to-Satellite Tracking formációt, mely során két műhold kering azonos pályán, egymástól pár 100 km távolságra, és közöttük folyamatosan mérik a távolság megváltozását. A távolságváltozást legnagyobb mértékben a Föld tömegeloszlásának egyenetlenségei okozzák, így alkalmassá teszik ezen méréseket a nehézségi erőterének meghatározására. A GRACE sikeressége további elképzelések számára megnyitotta a teret; kutatások folynak arról, hogy milyen új fedélzeti eszközökkel, formációkkal, műhold pályákkal lehetne javítani a globális nehézségi erőtér ismeretének minőségén, felbontásán.
A GRACE műholdpár sajátossága, hogy hónapos időbeli felbontással lehetővé teszi a Föld nehézségi erőterének időbeli változásainak globális vizsgálatát is. A GRACE műholdpár alapvető jelentőségűnek bizonyult a földi klíma napjainkban tapasztalható drasztikus változásainak, a globális szintű víz- és jégkészletek átrendeződéseinek monitorozásában, amely szerepkört a GRACE folytatásaként 2018-ban pályára állított GRACE-FO műholdak folytatják tovább. A GRACE-FO alapvetően letükrözte a GRACE műholdakat, a távolságváltozás mérés pontosságának javításán kívül gyakorlatilag a GRACE-szel teljesen megegyező műholdpárt alakítottak ki és állítottak pályára, megörökölve ezzel a GRACE-műholdak esetében tapasztalt szabályos hibaforrásokat is.  A későbbi műholdas formációk célja ezen szabályos hibahatások kiküszöbölése, mely eredményeként a tömeg-átrendeződések pontosabb és gyorsabb monitorozására adódik lehetőség. A szakirodalomban eddig fellelhető elképzelések (Cartwheel, Pendulum, Bender) néhány nagyobb műholdból álló formációkat takarnak; a jelölt feladata további formációk tervezése, amely a kivitelezhetőség, pontosság és gazdaságosság vizsgálatán, valamint az egyéb formációkkal való összehasonlításán alapszik. További elemzések irányulhatnak egy alapvetően a költséghatékonyság szempontjából megközelített, kispontosságú miniműhold flotta kialakításának lehetőségeire.
A vizsgálatok alapvetően az alábbi lépések szerint történik: előbb pályaszimulációkat végzünk, és megvizsgáljuk a műholdak közötti távolságmérésekkel kapcsolatos technikai elvárások teljesíthetőségét. Ezt követi a mérések szimulációja, mely során nagy felbontású (magas fok- és rendszámú) nehézségi erőtér modellek felhasználásával kiintegráljuk a pályát, egyeben a műhold közötti távolságváltozás méréseket (előbb zaj nélkül, később a GRACE-FO mérésekre jellemző színes zajjal véletlenszerűen szennyezve). Végezetül a szimulált mérésekből a nehézségi erőtér modell meghatározását végezzük, mely a feldolgozás menetének elméleti kidolgozására és egy nehézségi erőtér modell meghatározhatóságának bizonyítására terjed ki.

The launch of the GRACE twin satellites in 2002 was the first to implement the so-called Satellite-to-Satellite Tracking formation, which refers to two satellites on identical orbits at a distance of some 100 kms, and the variation of the distance between the satellites (range rate) is measured continuously. Variations in the inter-satellite distance are mainly affected by inhomogeneities in the Earth's mass distribution, hence such measurements are suitable for determining the gravity field. The success of GRACE has opened the door to further ideas; researches are underway on applicability of novel on-board instruments, developing formations, defining different satellite orbits in order to improve the accuracy and the resolution of the knowledge of the global gravity field.
A specific feature of the GRACE twin satellites is that they allow global determination of the temporal variations of the Earth's gravity field with a temporal resolution of one month. The GRACE twin satellites have proven to be an essential tool for monitoring the drastic climate changes observed nowadays, the rearrangements of water and ice resources at global scale; this task is continued by the GRACE-FO satellites launched in 2018 as a continuation of GRACE mission. The GRACE-FO satellites are copies of the GRACE satellites, apart from the range rate measurement, which could have been improved notably. Accordingly, GRACE-FO has inherited all systematic errors, which have also affected the GRACE mission.  Subsequent concepts of satellite formations aim to eliminate these systematic error effects, resulting in more accurate monitoring of mass redistributions with better spatial and temporal resolution. The novel formations available in the literature (Cartwheel, Pendulum, Bender) has developed for a few, large satellites. The candidate should design further formations, which should consider aspects of feasibility, accuracy and cost-effectiveness, based on comparison with other novel formations. Further analysis could be directed towards the feasibility of a low-cost mission consisting of a fleet of miniaturized satellites with less accurate (cheap) onboard instrumentation.
In principle, the investigations arranged in a closed-loop simulation: first, orbits are simulated, which meet the technical requirements for inter-satellite ranging. Then measurements are simulated, using high-resolution (high degree and order) gravity field models for integrating the orbit and inter-satellite range rates (without noise, or with random colour noise similar to GRACE-FO measurements). Finally, the gravity field model is determined from the simulated measurements, which involves the theoretical development of the processing sequence and the demonstration of feasibility of the gravity recovery.
